Thailand Shows Leadership in Water Resource Management at UNESCO High-Level Meeting in Paris

On June 11, 2025, Dr. Surasri Kitimonthon, Secretary-General of Thailand’s Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR), represented the country at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris during the high-level meeting commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) and 60 years of UNESCO’s work in water science. The event was held under the theme “Science for a Water Secure Future.”

In the “High-Level Panel: The Future of Water,” Dr. Surasri presented Thailand’s integrated water resource management approach, combining engineering, environmental, social, and technological aspects, while highlighting the vital role of youth and women in shaping the water-secure future.

The Thai delegation also participated in the Ministerial Roundtable to exchange policies on water security and transboundary cooperation, especially concerning the Mekong River. Thailand reaffirmed its commitment to advancing regional collaboration through the Mekong River Commission (MRC), promoting scientific data sharing, joint research, and effective early warning systems.

Dr. Surasri concluded by affirming Thailand’s dedication to working with UNESCO and the global community to ensure a safe, fair, and sustainable water future.
