Tracing the Origins of Bottled Drinking Water in Thailand: When Did It Begin and When Did It Become Popular?

Bottled drinking water in Thailand began around 1956 when Maxine Woodfield North, an American tourist, found local water unsafe for consumption. She later returned to establish a bottled water business under the brand Polaris. At first, bottled water was considered a luxury, as most Thais were accustomed to drinking rainwater or boiled tap water.

In 1959, the arrival of American soldiers during the Vietnam War significantly increased the demand for clean drinking water. This led to rapid growth in the bottled water industry, and Polaris became a generic name for bottled water for a time. Over the years, bottled water shifted from being a luxury to an everyday necessity. Today, the Thai bottled water market is worth over 40 billion baht, as many people still distrust tap water for direct consumption.
