Clean Drinking Water: Challenges and Building Public Trust in Urban Thailand

In recent years, the issue of clean drinking water has gained increasing attention in Thailand, especially in urban areas where many people rely on tap water and bottled water in their daily lives. Concerns about the safety of drinking water have led various agencies to implement measures and launch initiatives to enhance water quality and restore public confidence in safe water consumption.

One of the key players is the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA), which has been promoting the “Drinkable Tap Water” project. The aim is to assure the public that water from household and public taps meets the necessary standards for direct consumption. This project covers the entire process—from efficient filtration and disinfection, to random water quality testing at actual usage points across different areas. The results are submitted to the Department of Health in order to obtain official certification for “safe drinking water.”

MWA states that water quality is assessed based on strict standards, such as color, turbidity, residual chlorine levels, and the presence of heavy metals or harmful microorganisms. Every stage is subject to quality control according to international standards, alongside continuous upgrades to water pipelines and treatment plants to ensure modern efficiency.

On another front, the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) under the Ministry of Industry has issued new regulations requiring that drinking water dispensers, commonly found in schools, temples, train stations, government buildings, and public areas, comply with official standards (TIS). These standards cover aspects such as hygiene in the filtration system, electrical safety, humidity control, and the quality of materials used in the construction of the dispensers. The regulation is intended to prevent health risks, particularly for students and the general public who frequently use these public water sources in everyday life.
