From Tap to Drinking Glass: Why Water Filters Remain the Answer for Thai Households

In Thailand, the issue of drinking water and tap water remains a matter of significant concern, as it directly relates to the quality of life of the people. Recent reports indicate that the majority of the population still prefers to purchase bottled drinking water, as it is perceived to be cleaner and safer than tap water. Although tap water is technically safe for drinking, many households choose to install water filters at home to ensure its cleanliness before consumption. This reflects a lack of confidence in the public water supply system currently in service.

In certain areas, particularly in the northern region, contamination has been detected in natural water sources, especially arsenic levels exceeding safety standards, which has caused public concern. However, the relevant authorities have confirmed that the water treatment system continues to function properly and that the tap water supplied to households remains within safe standards for consumption. At the same time, efforts have been made to install additional systems to remove contaminants in order to strengthen public confidence.

Beyond quality issues, the supply of raw water for producing tap water presents another major challenge. In some provinces, the available water resources are limited and may only be sufficient for a short period. Without proper management, water shortages could arise, especially during the dry season when competition for water between agriculture, industry, and household consumption intensifies.

In some communities, there have also been complaints about tap water appearing cloudy or reddish when flowing from the faucet, which undermines public confidence. Although officials have reassured that it does not pose immediate health risks, it signals that pipeline systems and maintenance still require improvements. At the same time, expanding access to tap water services to areas not yet covered remains essential, as many villages continue to rely on local community water systems—only a portion of which have been certified as clean and safe for drinking.
